Message from the President

Hafa Adai GTF Members!

Well, after a very long hiatus, our website has actually been updated. There are still a few pages that are in need of work, namely the race schedule and membership info, but the pace should not be as glacial as before. Thank you for your patience.

JAPAN TRIATHLETES TAKE TOP SPOTS IN NAT'L CHAMPS

(6 July 2008) To say the 1st annual Guam National Triathlon Championship race was “challenging” would be an understatement. For some reason, the weather gods determined that race day was the perfect time to be uncooperative. Instead of the sunny weather that was on display the previous day, drizzle and overcast skies greeted the 54 soloists and 7 relay teams on hand..

As the 7am start approached, the wind and choppy waters off Merizo Pier were proving to be tough obstacles even for the swim course coordinators. When the start siren blasted – it was too much for one visiting novice triathlete who decided he would forego the swim and continue “unofficially” through the bike and run. After the first of three 500m laps was completed, the conditions would claim 4 more participants who would choose the same option.

CALLICRATE IS TOP DOG IN
"NO FRILLS" OLYMPIC DISTANCE

(22 June 2008) Well the turnout at the "No Frills" Olympic distance race was as small as you can get, but that did not deter the 9 people who participated from putting forth determined efforts. Although the race started out with partly cloudy skies, half-way through the bike portion the clouds opened up and unleashed a torrent of rain and thunder. Not one person complained (although I found it humorous that Chris Johnson stopped mid-way through his bike to head into transition so he could find shelter for his belongings).

In the end, the two-way battle for first between Isaac Callicrate and Jeremy Eisenbrandt was won by the slightly older Callicrate. Eisenbrandt, who reached T2 with over a minute in front tried in vain to hold of the hard charging Callicrate who crossed the line in 2:27:14. Eisenbrandt followed :22 seconds later. Mike Temerowski, in only his second Olympic distance race, rounded off the top 3 with a time of 2:35:28. Lone female racer, Maggie Greenwood, timed in at 3:01:25.
Thanks to the following individuals for their fantastic volunteer support: Dean & Yoko Baugh, Leevin Camacho, Dan O’Keefe, Belinda & Mike Berg, Derek Horton and Jody Oppelt..
